I held off purchasing a grill until one was available with removable plates so I was very happy when this one came out and even happier when I was able to buy it from Amazon at a great discount during one of their kitchen appliance sales. I've used my grill about 12 times now and here's my experience: My husband and I almost never bought chicken breasts (white meat) because no matter how carefully you cook them, they are always somewhat dry. This grill will change your mind. If you set it for the 350 degrees that the manual recommends (or even 375) and cook between 4 - 6 minutes, you will have the juiciest, most tender chicken breasts ever! This is the primary reason I kept the grill -- even if I only use it for chicken breasts, it is worth the money. Last night I marinated some chicken breasts in a little Italian dressing and they were delicious. I also cooked pork tenderloin on it with excellent results. I used a 1 pound piece (about 10 inches long, which I cut in half into two five inch long pieces. I rubbed them with Paul Prudhomme's veal and pork spice and grilled for about 4 minutes and they were delicious. My experience with steak has not been good and I need to experiment more. I've tried three times -- once with expensive, thick rib-eye steak (the flavor was not enhanced with the grill, nor were they very browned, but they were cooked nicely to a medium rare and they were very tender. The second time I marinated a London Broil and this came out sort of steamed although it was reasonably tender for a cheaper cut of beef. The third time I cooked less-expensive, more thinly cut rib eyes on which I used a rub, and they were tender and edible but bland. My experience so far is that rubs work better than marinades and thick cuts of meat cook better than thin. Marinades will lend a steamed quality to the beef. I really wish this grill heated to about 100 degrees hotter than it does -- then I think I could get a little more color on the beef. My unit did smell very bad the first time I used it -- still stinky, but less so the second time, and there was no odor the third time I used it. It took me a few times to master reattaching the removable plates -- if they are moving around after you reinstall them, you don't have them attached correctly. They will snap firmly into place and I now have the hang of it. I have put the plates into the dishwasher each time I've used them and they wash beautifully and are not damaged at all by the dishwasher. The grill is large and will cook 3, maybe 4 chicken breasts at a time. I liked the way it cooked the chicken so well that when I made stir fry, I cooked everything else in the wok, but I cooked the chicken in the grill, then cut it up and added it to the stir fry. I also cooked fresh tuna once and it was delicious. Sadly, I just received the February 2005 edition of Good Housekeeping magazine and on page 92 they review 4 grills (not this one). One of them is a pricey Cuisinart, but it looks and sounds very nice and I probably would have taken a look at that one. However, I am pretty happy with this one and just need to experiment more with beef.
